For Spring 2012, Longchamp unveils a creative collaboration with one of fashion’s hottest new names. Mary Katrantzou, the Greek-born, London- based designer, has been an insider icon ever since her dazzling digital prints opened the Central Saint Martins graduate show in 2008. A series of spectacular collections – none more so than her Autumn/Winter 2011 show inspired by Ming vases and Fabergé eggs – have established Mary Katrantzou as one of the must-sees of London Fashion Week. She now brings her unique creative vision to Longchamp with two special-edition tote bags and an exclusive print for the legendary Le Pliage® line.
For the two totes, Mary Katrantzou created her own inspired and individual interpretation of the theme “When East meets West”, drawing on an extraordinary array of references, from Asian temples and flower parades, through dragons and lanterns, to the architecture of Carnegie Hall. The larger tote places at its centre the sculptural staircase designed by Thomas Heatherwick for Longchamp’s La Maison Unique store in New York, extending its sinuous steps into trompe-l’œil straps, which themselves are prolonged by the leather handles of the bag. The staircase, chosen by Mary Katrantzou as a symbol of modern, Westernized architecture, is imagined as if in an aquarium and surrounded by a profusion of Eastern images – brightly coloured orchids, serpentine dragons, corals and a fan like the sun’s rays – to create the exuberant yet perfectly controlled print collage that is the designer’s trademark.
For the second, smaller tote, Mary Katrantzou took as her starting point a temple adorned with lanterns and flowers, creating a fresh, airy motif that miraculously merges with the monumental interior of New York’s Carnegie Hall. Brown calfskin handles and brushed gold hardware complement the beauty of the prints and echo the bags’ trompe-l’œil detailing.
For Le Pliage®, Mary Katrantzou created a poetic print of orchids and lanterns floating like balloons against a backdrop of blue sky.
- What I love about Le Pliage®, says Mary, beyond the fact that it is so simple and so practical, is that it provides the perfect canvas for a print designer.
Setting the seal on the collaboration, all the bags are signed with a leather label embossed with the signature «Mary Katrantzou for Longchamp».
Audrey Marnay is the face of Longchamp’s Spring 2011 advertising campaign. Chosen for her unique mix of French chic and cosmopolitan appeal, the flame-haired model-turned-actress is captured by the lens of the legendary photographer Patrick Demarchelier in a series of stunning images that evoke the Indian inspiration of the season’s leather goods, ready-to-wear and accessories.
Patrick Demarchelier’s luminous visuals picture Audrey Marnay against a studio backdrop of a surreally blue sea and clear sky, in sharp contrast to the raw, natural elements of the décor. In one image, Audrey stands, like a modern-day explorer, at the prow of an authentic pirogue, holding the season’s star bag, the Impérial, whose soft, supple leather and intricate detailing are a testament to Longchamp’s tradition of savoir-faire. In another, she sits on a wooden jetty dangling the Gatsby handbag and with the petal-print Darshan tote beside her. All the visuals feature key pieces from Longchamp’s Spring 2011 ready-to-wear and accessories collection — a lightweight parka, a butter-soft lambskin blouson, tie-dyed knitwear, leather cuffs and platform wedges trimmed with ruffles.
“Kate Moss for Longchamp” is a cutting-edge collection of bags designed by Kate with the finest leather craftsmanship of Longchamp. For her second collection, Kate created three new lines – Neo Pure (launched end of September), Neo Patch and Neo Precious (launched mid October) – and selected a few “Rock ’n’ Casual” bags from her first collection to continue (launched end of August).
NEO PATCH
For her Neo Patch line, which features graphic diagonal stripes in a mixture of exotic finishes on calfskin, Kate chose her favourite colours, including a pale grey, jade green and brilliant red that recall her first collection “Kate Moss for Longchamp”. The Neo Patch line introduces two stylish new clutches – one with a flap and a removable strap, the other rectangular, with a zipper along the top – and also revisits the Gloucester travel bag, an icon in the making, which looks stunning in Kate’s multicoloured patchwork with a sapphire trim. For a timelessly chic evening look, the two clutches are interpreted in a black-on-black patchwork that spotlights their sophisticated play on textures, including lizard, python and crocodile.
NEO PRECIOUS
“I have always loved exotic leathers. It’s the richness of them that attracts me. It’s the same with the ornaments on the clutches – I just love the idea of having jewels on a bag,” explains Kate of the Neo Precious theme. The season’s three jewel hues look truly lustrous when rendered in crocodile-styled patent calfskin on the two Neo Precious clutches, which share the same simply elegant shape as those in the Neo Patch theme. Both are embellished with two sumptuous tonal cabochons, interspersed with three smaller stones, which reflect Kate’s fascination for Jazz Age glamour.
The inspiration for this new collection is “Neo Vintage”. Vintage leather skins, colours and styles put together with edgy shapes and modern graphic design. The names of the different lines evoke this neo vintage spirit (Neo Precious, Neo Pure and Neo Patch)
Kate wanted to introduce edgy long chains, super chic crocodile effect, very 30′s vintage jewels, vintage colours but also new shapes and modern graphic elements. Longchamp brought the quality of materials and elements of the brand DNA that Kate wanted to revisit for this collection.
Further the success of the Kate Moss 1 collection, several Rock ‘n’ Casual bags are continued in black and cognac but new colours are also introduced, the zebra lining is maintained in the Neo Pure and Rock ‘n’ Casual lines and a twist of vibrant red in the Neo Patch multi colour Gloucester bag will bring the roch touch.
